Canossaville Heartbeat – Vol 36

School’s out but the learning continues!

I recently joined the Canossa Catholic Primary School staff and Primary 5 students on a STEM trip to Hong Kong. The four-day trip was packed with fruitful learning and meaningful activities, including a visit to Pui Tak Canossian Primary School where students exchanged knowledge related to STEM. I was impressed by our students’ love for reading, as they had packed thick books in their luggage despite the busy itinerary. The students had to be reminded to remove the books from their backpacks while out of the hotel, as there was no time to read during the day.

What was remarkable is that none of the students complained about missing their digital devices — even though they were only allowed to use them in the evenings to share their stories with their parents. This experience highlights the importance of adults guiding children in developing good habits, such as a love for reading and a balanced approach to technology.

The trip included a dim sum-making class, Chinese tea appreciation, and visits to the Science Museum and Disneyland, where students participated in a STEM workshop. They also learnt about Cantonese opera, including singing, acting, speaking, and fighting actions. What made this trip special was the opportunity to learn hands-on with friends beyond the classroom.

As we are now in the midst of the June holidays, parents can encourage their children to use their time productively by engaging in activities that promote life skills, such as cooking, gardening, or volunteering. By rethinking the purpose of school holidays, parents can help their children develop a love for learning that goes beyond digital devices and classroom walls. Families can create lasting memories and foster a growth mindset that will benefit their children throughout their lives through the different experiences they create for their children. These positive experiences also fill the children’s emotional bank with joyfulness and positivism, traits required to keep building a resilient spirit. So let us enjoy the break that God has provided!
