Alice's Newfound Resilience

Alice (not her real name) is a child with profound hearing loss in Canossaville Preschool (CPS). In 2022, when she was fitted with her cochlear implants on both ears, she resisted wearing them and refused to learn how to care for them. Unable to communicate verbally, she relies on pointing, pulling, or gesturing to express herself.

At CPS, Alice was supported through Canossian EIPIC (Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children), where she received dedicated sessions on how to manage her hearing loss. Alice’s Early Intervention teachers developed a range of strategies to help her become familiar and comfortable with her hearing devices. These strategies were shared with her preschool teachers and parents, ensuring consistent reinforcement both in class and at home.

Today, she proudly takes ownership of her hearing devices and even reminding her teachers to connect her to the FM system in class! Through the support of her teachers and the encouragement of her parents, Alice has blossomed into a chatty, expressive child who speaks in full sentences, asks questions, and confidently shares her thoughts.

These intervention sessions are offered at low or no cost to families, ensuring that every child can receive the help they need regardless of their circumstances. Having these services in-house eliminates the need for families to fetch their children to and from external therapy sessions, making the support more accessible and seamless. It also allows preschool teachers and early intervention teachers to work closely together on shared strategies, ensuring a consistent and holistic learning experience for each child.
