Canossaville Heartbeat – Vol 31
In today’s fast-paced world, the role of grandparents often transcends traditional boundaries, becoming increasingly significant within families and communities. Pope Francis has frequently emphasised the invaluable contributions of grandparents, drawing inspiration from Psalm 71:9, which implores, “Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone.” This poignant verse resonates deeply with the Pope’s message, underscoring the dignity, wisdom, and essential role of the elderly, especially grandparents, in society.
Grandparents and the Elderly as Custodians of Wisdom
One of the central themes in Pope Francis’ reflections is the wisdom that grandparents bring to families. Their life experiences, often marked by resilience and perseverance, offer invaluable lessons to younger generations. He often refers to them as a “living memory” of the people, a source of wisdom, and a reservoir of faith and tradition.
This wisdom is not merely about knowledge but encompasses moral and spiritual guidance, fostering a sense of identity and continuity within families. Grandparents’ stories, traditions, and life lessons become a rich tapestry that weaves through generations, grounding families in shared values and history.
The Role of Grandparents and the Elderly in Faith Formation
Pope Francis emphasises the role of grandparents in the spiritual upbringing of their grandchildren. In many cultures, grandparents are the ones who introduce and nurture faith within the family. Their lived experiences of faith, prayer, and devotion provide a powerful witness to younger generations. The Pope often encourages grandparents to actively participate in the faith life of their families, sharing their journey of faith and instilling a sense of reverence and trust in God. Hence, grandparents and the elderly are essential in passing down the faith to younger generations, teaching them about life, love, and resilience.
Grandparents as Pillars of Support
In modern society, where both parents often work, grandparents frequently step in as primary caregivers, offering stability and love. Pope Francis acknowledges this vital role, recognising that grandparents provide emotional support, care, and often practical assistance. Their presence ensures that family values and traditions are upheld, and their homes become sanctuaries of love and security for their grandchildren.
The Inspiration of St. Magdalene of Canossa
St. Magdalene of Canossa who dedicated her life to serving the poor, the sick, and the marginalised, also included the elderly in her care. She called them mountains of gems, recognising that “Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days” (Psalm 16:16) Her love and respect for the elderly can be said to have been driven by a profound love for Christ and a deep compassion for those in need. This can be seen in how she would care for her elderly Sisters and companions and her love for the elderly and sick in hospital.
Here at the Canossian Village
We honour our grandparents’ and the elderly here at the Canossian Village in 2 ways. Children in Canossa Catholic Primary School and Canossian School spend some time on the Monday, before the celebration, reflecting on how their grandparents and elderly neighbours or caregivers love them so much. They make little cards for them thanking them for being their carers and for loving them. Canossaville supports the celebration of grandparents by presenting each child with a bag of retro biscuits to offer to their grandparents or an elderly neighbour as a gift of gratitude and piety.
The second way in which we honour grandparents and the elderly is the annual Family Mass on the Feast of St Anne and St Joachim, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. This year, many grandparents and elderly joined in to worship as ONE CANOSSIAN family. Friar Derrick, who celebrated the Mass, also gave a special blessing to all the grandparents and the elderly at the end of Mass.
The teachings of Pope Francis, the reflection of Psalm 71:9, and the inspiration of St. Magdalene of Canossa collectively emphasize the importance of honoring and caring for the elderly. They remind us that grandparents and the elderly are not only a source of wisdom and tradition but also a testament to the continuity and resilience of the human spirit.
Blessed Day of Grandparents and Elderly!
