Steven's Journey and Growth

Steven (not his real name) attends Saturday Care at Canossaville Children and Community Services. He faces daily challenges in emotional regulation and focus. Support for him works most effectively when combined with consistent structure, emotional support, and therapeutic care.

During the weekdays, Steven attends Canossaville Student Care where he follows a structured routine. He also receives support services from the Canossian Child Development Unit. However, his weekends, like those of several other children with limited access to meaningful weekend engagement, were spent unsupervised and lonely.

Recognising the urgent need for an engaging weekend programme, Canossaville launched Saturday Care in 2024, with support from Caritas Singapore. This initiative offers structured enrichment activities on Saturdays, in a nurturing environment where Steven and other children receive attention, supervision, and community support from their peers and trusted adults. Saturday Care fills an essential need for social interaction, enrichment and emotional well-being outside school hours. Furthermore, the three activities offered as part of Saturday Care are football, violin and art, carefully selected to offer diverse avenues for skills discovery.

Steven’s involvement in this programme served as a key turning point for improvement, growth and in uncovering his hidden talents. Through football, he has learned discipline, teamwork, and how to channel his energy positively. Violin sessions have helped him develop focus, patience, and emotional expression through music. Art, a domain Steven has a natural affinity for, has continued to be a safe and fulfilling outlet for his creativity. These experiences have helped him discover new skills, and have also given him a stronger sense of identity, purpose and confidence.

Steven is a child with deep potential and his journey illustrates how enriching and supportive experiences like Saturday Care can lead to significant personal breakthroughs. His increased confidence, discovery of talents, and improved emotional regulation and focus demonstrate that children can flourish when given appropriate opportunities and nurturing environments.

Thanks to the support from our donors and partners, Canossaville is able to provide these services that the children like Steven requires for his development in-house. Steven is steadily building the skills he needs to thrive, not just in managing his challenges, but in fully embracing the unique and successful individual he can become.

Help children like Steven receive the support that they need.
